With well over one-third of fulltime Citrus county residents over the age of 65, there are a lot of people here with some form of dementia, including Alzheimer’s. National statistics indicate about 10% of these seniors have some sort of memory challenges -- that’s easily over 5,000 people in our county!
Some of them bicycle; I know several. It’s so wonderful to see someone who has immense challenges still enjoying a physical activity she or he has performed for years! Older memories are easier to retrieve, so the experience of being with a group of long-term cycling friends and pedaling along the Withlacoochee State Trail is a familiar and pleasurable experience.
Certification as a dementia-friendly business is offered by Coping with Dementia LLC of Crystal River. The Hen House Café was the first business in our county to receive this certification, and the staff lives their training. A group of us bicyclists often have breakfast there once a week (or more!) and it is heart-warming to watch the staff be patient with food orders and making change.
Caregivers have such extraordinary burdens on them, and to have local businesses recognize they can have a role to play in quality of life is amazing.
